Portage Central's fall production

Director Kathy Mulay has announced that the 2008 fall play will feature the production choice that will be performed at the 2009 International Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. Only those students that have committed to the festival trip will be involved. The title of that production will be released once the rights have been approved by the licensing company. Portage Central Performing Arts Department under the direction of Kathy Mulay has been selected to perform in the Edinburgh Theatre Festival in Edinburgh Scotland in August of 2009 as part of the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF) The Edinburgh Theatre Festival is the largest and most prestigious performing art festival in the world. Each August, Edinburgh, Scotland becomes a magical place as performing artists from all over the world come to Scotland to take part in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The whole city becomes a stage as visitors view performances from every possible venue, from playgrounds, to conference rooms, to city parks, to churches. The Fringe Festival includes over 18,000 different performances of music, theatre, and dance during its three week run. Portage Central’s performance will be showcased in the second week of the festival in August in 2009.

Portage Central was selected by the AHSTF Board of Advisors to participate in the festival. The Board, comprised of theatre educators and professionals, reviews all completed applications and identifies the top high schools based on their most recent bodies of work, community involvement, philosophies and recommendations. Most recently, Portage Central presented the ambitious production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Past productions have included Miss Saigon, Enter Laughing, The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Diary of Anne Frank, Les Miserables, a new adaptation of Little Women, and Ragtime.

This trip will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for those students who will serve as ambassadors representing the performing arts of Portage in the Edinburgh Festival. The trip will include a tour of London and Edinburgh, tickets to West End shows, pass to the festival as well as present four performances at the festival. Auditions for the AHSTF 2009 production will be the first week of the 2008-9 school year. Specific times will be posted on Mrs. Mulay’s eboard. As of yet, a program has not been selected. Mrs. Mulay will update information on her eboard periodically, so keep posted.

PC Drama needs help financing this trip. Students (and parents) involved will be participating in various fundraising activities to finance their two-week adventure to Scotland and England over the 2008-09 school year. Contributions and donations are welcome. All donations should be made payable to Portage Central Performing Arts.
